The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is addressing significant supply shortages affecting troops in several brigades, including the 30th Mechanized Brigade, the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, and the 108th Territorial Defense Brigade. This response follows reports of inadequate food and water supplies at remote positions.
According to a statement from the Ministry, these supply deficiencies should not become systemic. The Ministry is collaborating with the General Staff to rectify the situation. A recent incident involving the 14th Mechanized Brigade has drawn particular attention, prompting an internal investigation.
The investigation revealed that soldiers in the 14th Brigade, stationed in the Kupiansk direction, had experienced severe logistical failures. Reports indicated that troops went without food and water for weeks, leading some to resort to drinking rainwater. Delays in food deliveries reportedly ranged from 10 to 17 days.
Images circulated online depicted the drastic effects of malnutrition on the soldiers, with some losing significant weight, dropping from 80-90 kilograms to around 50 kilograms. Family members of the soldiers expressed concern over the lack of communication, which hindered their ability to send assistance to the units.
In response to the situation, the General Staff cited the heightened danger of traditional supply routes due to ongoing shelling. As a result, alternative supply methods, such as using drones or river transport, were employed.
The fallout from the media coverage of these supply issues has led to personnel changes within the military. The commander of the 14th Brigade was dismissed for failing to report the true state of affairs, while the leader of the 10th Army Corps was removed from his position and reassigned at a lower rank.
Furthermore, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has ordered commanders of various groupings and corps to verify the supply conditions for troops on the front lines by May 20. The Ministry emphasized that distorted reports regarding combat conditions would have direct negative consequences for officials involved.
The Ukrainian military is confronting serious supply shortages, particularly highlighted by a scandal involving the 14th Mechanized Brigade. Investigations are underway to address these logistical failures and ensure adequate support for troops on the front lines.
