Ukrainian Forces Strike Russian Oil Refinery in Samara Region

In a significant military operation, Ukrainian special operations forces, alongside drone units, targeted the Syzran Oil Refinery operated by the Russian state company Rosneft during the night of May 21. The facility, located over 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is known for its capacity to process up to nine million tons of oil annually.

The attack resulted in a large fire at the refinery, which not only serves civilian needs but also supplies fuel to the Russian military aviation and ground forces in central and southern Russia. Additionally, products from the refinery are exported via the Volga River and the Caspian Sea. According to Ukrainian officials, damaging Russia’s oil infrastructure is aimed at undermining its economic and logistical capabilities in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to the military for the successful strike, referring to it as another long-range sanction against Russian oil processing. He emphasized the continuation of this strategic approach in a message on Telegram.

Earlier on the same day, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, the governor of the Samara region, confirmed an attack in Syzran but did not specify the targeted facilities. Ukrainian monitoring channels reported flames at the oil refinery, and Russian media outlet Astra corroborated the information through open-source intelligence analysis, noting the presence of black smoke rising over the industrial area.

In response to the attack, the governor announced a temporary airspace closure at all altitudes in the Samara region, implementing a regime referred to as “Carpet.” The Syzran Oil Refinery is part of Rosneft’s Samara group of refineries and has a primary processing capacity of 8.5 million tons per year, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, marine fuel, liquefied gas, and bitumen. This facility has previously been targeted multiple times by Ukrainian forces.

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, various sites within Russia have experienced airstrikes, with oil refineries frequently being the primary targets. The Ukrainian General Staff has confirmed most of these attacks, stating that the Ukrainian defense forces are systematically implementing measures to diminish the combat potential of Russian occupying forces and to compel Russia to cease its armed aggression against Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces successfully struck the Syzran Oil Refinery in Russia, igniting a large fire and disrupting military fuel supplies. President Zelensky praised the operation as part of ongoing efforts to weaken Russia's war capabilities.
