Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Chemical Plant in Stavropol Region

On the night of May 20, Ukrainian drones launched an attack on the “Nevinnomyssk Azot” chemical complex located in Russia’s Stavropol region, igniting a fire within the industrial zone. This incident marks the second assault on the facility in just a few days, following an earlier attack on May 16.

Details of the Incident

Authorities in Stavropol declared a “drone threat” the evening before the attack, advising residents of Nevinnomyssk to remain indoors and away from windows. Internet services in the city were suspended at midnight to mitigate communication during the incident.

Mikhail Minenkov, the head of Nevinnomyssk, confirmed the attack, describing it as an “air defense engagement” aimed at the industrial area. Reports indicated that as of 5 a.m., the assault was ongoing, with local air defense systems activated. Residents reported seeing flames in the industrial zone.

Significance of the Attack

The “Nevinnomyssk Azot” facility is officially recognized for its production of fertilizers and household chemicals. However, open-source intelligence analysts suggest that the plant is significantly involved in supporting the Russian military-industrial complex. Acetic acid produced at this site is reportedly sent to a factory in Dzerzhinsk, where it is used to manufacture explosive materials for artillery shells.

The recent drone strikes on the Nevinnomyssk Azot chemical plant highlight ongoing tensions and the strategic targeting of facilities linked to military production in Russia. This incident underscores the complex dynamics of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, particularly regarding industrial capabilities.
