U.S. Reduces Troop Presence in Europe, Scaling Back to 2021 Levels

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced a reduction in its brigade combat teams stationed in Europe, decreasing the number from four to three. This decision, confirmed by Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, returns troop levels to those seen in 2021.

Parnell indicated that the change is part of a comprehensive review of American military presence in Europe. As a result of this adjustment, the deployment of U.S. forces in Poland has been temporarily postponed.

“The Department will finalize the positioning of these and other U.S. forces in Europe based on further analysis of strategic and operational needs, as well as the capability of allies to contribute to European defense. This analysis aims to advance President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy in Europe and other regions, particularly by encouraging NATO allies to take on greater responsibility for their own defense,” Parnell stated.

In a related discussion, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. They agreed that the U.S. Department of Defense would maintain close communication with Polish officials to ensure a robust military presence in Poland.

“Poland has demonstrated both the capability and the resolve to defend itself. Other NATO allies should follow this example,” Parnell emphasized.

Earlier reports indicated that the Pentagon had canceled the deployment of a combat group from the 2nd Armored Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, which involved over 4,000 soldiers and their equipment, to Poland. Currently, approximately 10,000 U.S. service members are stationed in Poland.

On May 2, U.S. media reported that the Department of Defense plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, relocating them to the U.S. and other overseas positions. There are about 36,000 American troops currently based in Germany. This move follows President Trump’s announcement of a significant reduction in U.S. military presence in Germany amidst tensions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the conflict in Iran.

Moreover, Trump had previously indicated that he was considering reducing troop levels not only in Germany but also in Italy, citing NATO allies’ reluctance to support U.S. military actions against Iran.

In May 2025, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that Washington intends to begin discussions with European allies regarding the reduction of American forces in Europe.

The U.S. has cut its brigade combat teams in Europe from four to three, reverting to 2021 troop levels. This decision reflects a strategic review of military presence and aims to encourage NATO allies to enhance their defense responsibilities.
