In the early hours of May 8, Ukrainian forces conducted a drone strike on the “Permnefteorgsintez” oil refinery and a nearby oil pumping station in the Russian city of Perm. This marks the third attack on these facilities within a short span, highlighting a significant escalation in Ukraine’s military operations against Russian energy infrastructure.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that both the refinery and the pumping station are located over 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The attack reportedly caused a fire in one of the refinery’s primary processing units, which is crucial for oil refinement. Additionally, one of the storage tanks at the pumping station was also hit.
The Permnefteorgsintez refinery is one of the largest oil processing facilities in Russia, supplying fuel to both civilian sectors and the Russian military. The associated pumping station, owned by Transneft, serves as a strategically important hub within Russia’s main oil transportation system, distributing oil in four directions, including to the Perm refinery.
This incident follows a prior strike on the same oil infrastructure reported on May 7. Dmitry Mahonin, the governor of the Perm region, confirmed on May 8 that drones had targeted industrial sites in the area, though he provided no details on the damage or casualties resulting from the strikes.
On the night of May 8, several regions across Russia, including Rostov, Yaroslavl, Chechnya, and the annexed Crimea, experienced a wave of drone attacks attributed to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have stated that these operations are retaliatory in nature, asserting that they are responding to Russian military actions and violations of ceasefire agreements.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, various targets within Russia have been subjected to aerial assaults, with oil refineries frequently being among the primary objectives. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has confirmed many of these attacks, emphasizing that they aim to diminish the combat capabilities of Russian occupying forces and compel Russia to cease its military aggression against Ukraine.
Ukrainian drone strikes have targeted key oil infrastructure in Russia, specifically the Permnefteorgsintez refinery, marking a significant escalation in military operations. These actions are part of Ukraine's broader strategy to diminish Russian military capabilities and respond to ongoing aggression.
