Ukrainian counterintelligence has apprehended an individual suspected of being a Russian military intelligence agent in the Donetsk region. The suspect allegedly gathered coordinates for potential airstrikes targeting the cities of Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka.
The arrested individual, identified as a local unemployed man, reportedly came to the attention of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) while seeking easy money through Telegram channels associated with Russian intelligence services. Following remote recruitment and training, he conducted reconnaissance in frontline communities, photographing and marking the positions of Ukrainian defenders on Google Maps.
The information he collected was stored on his smartphone, and he communicated with his Russian handler via messaging applications to coordinate his activities.
According to the intelligence gathered by the agent, Russian forces were preparing to strike key locations, including:
- backup command posts;
- fortified positions;
- logistical warehouses containing weapons and ammunition.
For these operations, the Russians intended to deploy heavy bombs, specifically the FAB-500 and potentially the FAB-1500, equipped with guidance and correction modules.
During a search of the suspect’s premises, authorities seized his phone, which contained evidence of his intelligence-gathering activities and communications with his Russian supervisor. Following the investigation, the individual was charged under part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to treason in conditions of martial law.
The suspect is currently in custody and faces a potential life sentence along with asset confiscation.
