Ukrainian Drone Strikes Reduce Capacity at Russian Oil Refinery in Tuapse

Following a series of drone strikes on the Tuapse oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region, production capacity at the facility has reportedly diminished. This marks the fourth such attack, which occurred on the night of May 1.

Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, announced the latest strike early on the morning of May 1. He referenced the ongoing operations in a social media post, suggesting a routine targeting of the facility.

“Tuapse, version 4.0: weekly visits with friends. The oil street, bar number 24…”

Olga Meloshina, spokesperson for the Ukrainian drone forces, confirmed that operations are coordinated with other branches of Ukraine’s defense forces. She indicated that further details about the operation would be disclosed following official confirmation from the General Staff.

According to Meloshina, the refinery had an annual processing capacity of 12 million tons of oil. She noted that the recent attacks have likely reduced this capacity, emphasizing Ukraine’s intention to continue diminishing the operational capabilities of Russian forces.

Meloshina stated that attacks on oil infrastructure are legitimate military targets, as they contribute to funding the Russian military. She explained, “Drone forces exclusively target facilities related to the enemy’s military… oil processing serves as a financial source for the enemy’s army.”

She also highlighted the dual impact of such strikes, which not only affect the economy but also serve a psychological purpose by undermining perceptions of security within Russia’s rear areas. “Previously, regions 1,500 to 2,000 kilometers from the state border were considered safe for Russia, but the situation has changed,” she remarked.

Preliminary assessments for April indicate that Russian oil refining capabilities may have decreased by 20 to 30 percent, although final figures are still being confirmed. Meloshina noted that the effectiveness of these operations is closely linked to the degradation of Russia’s air defense systems, mentioning that over 100 surface-to-air missile systems have been destroyed by Ukrainian forces during the winter and early spring.

In Tuapse, images circulating online show thick black smoke rising from the refinery following the latest attack. Local reports indicate that a significant fire has erupted and there are disruptions to electricity supply in the area.

Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Krasnodar Krai, has not commented on the recent fire but has extended May holiday greetings to residents of the region.

Recent drone strikes on the Tuapse oil refinery in Russia have reportedly reduced its production capacity. Ukrainian officials assert that such operations target facilities that financially support the Russian military, with significant impacts on both economic and psychological fronts.
