Ukrainian border guards have introduced a state-of-the-art mobile air defense system designed to target enemy drones during nighttime operations. This innovative setup allows for remote operation via a standard gaming joystick, significantly enhancing the effectiveness of border patrols.
The mobile fire group, part of the border service’s “Oberih” unit, operates a powerful system featuring a dual-caliber Browning machine gun and a 7.62 mm PKT. The installation has undergone significant upgrades, incorporating advanced engineering solutions that enable traditional weaponry mounted on a pickup truck to function effectively in modern combat scenarios.
Equipped with an electronic targeting system and thermal optics, the unit can detect aerial threats even in low visibility conditions. Target acquisition and fire control are managed entirely remotely, allowing operators to engage targets from a safe distance using an Xbox controller and a laptop monitor.
“This upgraded system enables a rapid response to aerial threats and precise elimination of enemy strike drones,” stated officials from the State Border Guard Service.
Preparation for nighttime operations requires meticulous coordination among crew members, including quick setup from under a cover, loading ammunition belts, and configuring electronic systems. All operational activities take place in dim light or darkness, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and efficiency.
A key advantage of this modernized system is the enhanced safety it provides to military personnel. Remote control capabilities allow the crew to fire from a protected location, minimizing their exposure to potential threats.
In a related development, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Fedorov, announced the initiation of an experimental private air defense project that has already enlisted 27 companies from various sectors. These firms, located in regions such as Kharkiv, Odesa, and Kyiv, have received authorization from the Ministry of Defense to undertake air defense tasks.
Two of these companies are currently engaged in combat operations, successfully neutralizing approximately 20 Russian drones. Additionally, the Ministry is actively testing cost-effective missiles designed to intercept Iranian-made “Shahed” drones, with plans for mass production underway.
The primary objective of this initiative, as directed by the president, is to significantly scale up production to ensure robust air defense for Ukraine and build a necessary arsenal for the upcoming autumn and winter months.
