Ukraine’s NATO Membership Viewed as Beneficial for All Parties, Says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asserted that Ukraine’s membership in NATO aligns not only with the interests of Kyiv and the Alliance but also with those of Russia. This statement was made during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Kyiv.

Zelensky emphasized that most NATO member states recognize that Ukraine’s inclusion is as crucial for the Alliance as it is for Ukraine itself. He stated, “Most NATO countries understand that Ukraine in NATO is needed by NATO no less than it is needed by Ukraine.”

Furthermore, the president expressed the view that NATO membership would also be advantageous for Russia. He remarked, “I believe that it is also necessary for the Russians that Ukraine is in NATO. Because in the future, it may be painful for the Russians if Ukraine is not in NATO.”

The prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership remains a pivotal issue in the relationship between Kyiv and the Alliance. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stated that joining NATO is seen as the most effective guarantee of long-term security following the conclusion of the ongoing conflict.

Some international partners share this perspective on Ukraine’s NATO membership. For instance, Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson previously noted that Ukraine could significantly strengthen NATO due to the combat experience of its armed forces, innovations in the military sector, and a robust defense industry. He indicated that the Ukrainian military and defense sector could become a vital asset for the security of all of Europe.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has highlighted that NATO membership is beneficial not only for Ukraine but also for NATO and potentially for Russia. The ongoing discussions around Ukraine's NATO membership are deemed crucial for ensuring long-term security in the region.
