Ukraine has publicly showcased its new surface-to-air missile, identified as ‘Coral’, for the first time at a recent arms exhibition.
This missile is part of Ukraine’s ongoing development in air defense systems, with analysts from The War Zone linking it to the ‘Coral’ project, which has been in the works for some time.
While the missile shares several characteristics with previously presented ‘Coral’ concepts, it is possible that some features have been altered for counterintelligence purposes.
The missile appears to be more than just a demonstration model; it resembles a prototype or even a fully operational weapon. The ‘Coral’ project was initially introduced by the design bureau ‘Luch’ in 2021 as a medium-range air defense missile.
Originally, the missile’s range was estimated to be between 30 and 50 kilometers, but this may have been revised to a potential range of up to 100 kilometers.
Key specifications include a weight of approximately 300 kilograms, a warhead weighing 25 kilograms, and a speed of up to 3,600 kilometers per hour.
According to Oleg Korostylev, head of the ‘Luch’ design bureau, the ‘Coral’ missile is designed to target ballistic threats. He noted that the missile will feature an active radar homing head called ‘Onyx’, developed by Radionix, with the project currently estimated to be about 70% complete.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has previously emphasized the importance of developing air defense systems, including ‘Coral’, as a top priority, highlighting the need for mobile systems with ranges exceeding 100 kilometers.
Additionally, Ukraine is collaborating with Spain on air defense initiatives, involving both Ukrainian enterprises and the Spanish group Sener.
Reports suggest that the missile likely employs proven subsystems, including an engine, inertial navigation, and a contactless detonator. It is also expected to utilize a gas-dynamic control system for maneuvering during the final phase of its trajectory, which is crucial for intercepting complex targets at high altitudes. Some elements from earlier concepts may have been modified in this latest version.
