Ukraine Faces Intensified Attacks as Zelensky Requests U.S. Support

On May 27, 2026, Ukraine marked the 1,554th day of the ongoing conflict with Russia, as President Volodymyr Zelensky sent an urgent letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress, highlighting a critical shortage of air defense systems. This correspondence followed a significant attack by Russian forces using two drones, known as “Oreshniks,” against Ukrainian targets.

During a meeting with the ruling party faction, Zelensky expressed his belief that the war could extend for another six months, potentially lasting until November. This statement was made public by his communications advisor, Dmytro Lytvyn.

The Ukrainian parliament, Verkhovna Rada, approved a new law on public procurement aimed at overhauling the system to align with European standards and facilitate Ukraine’s integration into the European Union, as announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

In a related statement, Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defense Staff of the Netherlands, emphasized Ukraine’s integral role in European security. He noted that post-war cooperation in air defense would be essential, given Ukraine’s current contributions.

On the battlefield, Russian forces launched 65 attacks since the start of the day, focusing their efforts on the Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole directions, with increased activity reported in the Lyman area, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Zelensky convened a meeting to discuss the frontline situation, where he revealed information regarding Russia’s plans for additional mobilization, which aims to increase the number of occupying troops by tens of thousands. Discussions also centered on defense strategies in Kharkiv, particularly in the Kupiansk area, as well as in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.

The Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Armed Forces announced the launch of a program called “Logistical Lockdown,” which aims to enhance middle-strike operations against Russian military rear positions, according to Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

Andriy Biletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps, stated that the next six to nine months could be pivotal for Ukraine, offering a crucial window to regain battlefield initiative against Russia and strengthen positions for future peace negotiations.

Ukrainian forces also refuted claims of Russian troops capturing the village of Hraniv in the Kharkiv region, asserting that the information was inaccurate.

In Russia, attacks targeted the 325th aviation repair plant in Taganrog, a refinery in Tuapse, and a military airfield in Voronezh, as reported by the Telegram channel Astra.

Explosions were reported in Crimea, including near the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and various airfields, with reports of smoke in the Sevastopol area.

This year, Ukrainian military forces received 485,000 drones and other equipment valued at 31.4 billion UAH through the DOT-Chain Defence arms marketplace, according to Fedorov.

Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 150 out of 163 drones launched by Russian forces in a recent attack, according to the Air Force.

In the wake of the conflict, casualties and damage continue to mount. In Odesa, a drone strike on a shopping center resulted in 11 injuries, including two children. In Kherson, Russian shelling targeted a children’s playground, leading to one fatality and injuries to a mother and her two daughters.

Since 2022, 712 residential properties in Konstantynivka, Donetsk region, have been officially recognized as destroyed. The Danish Institute Against Torture documented the illegal deportation of 17,000 Ukrainian prisoners from occupied territories to Russia, urging accountability for these actions.

Russian attacks have also left consumers in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions without electricity, according to Ukrenergo. Meanwhile, thermal power plants in Kyiv, heavily damaged by winter assaults, are expected to resume heat production before the next heating season.

Environmental damage from the conflict has been severe, with forest fires in the Sievierodonetsk community causing losses estimated at 25 billion UAH, according to the State Ecological Inspectorate in Luhansk.

On the diplomatic front, Ukraine celebrated the Day of Special Operations Forces, marking the establishment of these units in 2016. Zelensky extended greetings to Muslims worldwide for the Kurban Bayram holiday and discussed EU membership and air defense enhancement with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Ukrainian government allocated 3 billion UAH for the installation of additional heating facilities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Russia that its actions regarding the confiscation of property in occupied territories lack legal standing and that all illegally appropriated assets will need to be returned to rightful owners.

Furthermore, Ukraine signed 22 cooperation agreements with international partners at the Summit of Cities and Regions.

As the conflict continues, the international community remains engaged, with various countries responding to the situation in Ukraine and addressing their own national security concerns.

As Ukraine endures intensified attacks from Russian forces, President Zelensky has reached out to the U.S. for critical military support. The situation on the ground remains dire, with increasing casualties and ongoing military operations, while diplomatic efforts continue to secure international cooperation.
