Russia has announced its intention to implement a ceasefire on May 9, irrespective of whether Ukraine agrees to the temporary truce. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, made this statement on April 30.
When asked about Ukraine’s potential reaction to the ceasefire proposal, Peskov remarked that a response from Kyiv is not necessary for the decision to proceed. He stated, “This is the decision of the head of the Russian state, and it will be executed. However, of course, everyone would expect some reaction from the Kyiv regime regarding their intentions. So far, there has been none.” This comment was reported by the TASS news agency.
The idea for a ceasefire on May 9 was first raised during a conversation between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump on April 29. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, indicated that the initiative originated from Putin and received strong support from Trump. Trump himself claimed he had suggested a “brief ceasefire” during their discussion.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would reach out to the United States for clarification on the proposal, questioning whether it pertains to a brief pause for security during the Moscow parade or something more substantial. Zelensky also urged Russia to consider a long-term ceasefire.
Russia's announcement of a planned ceasefire on May 9 has raised questions about Ukraine's stance on the proposal. While the Kremlin insists the decision is final, Ukraine seeks clarification from the U.S. regarding the nature and implications of the truce.
