Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be removed from power by members of his inner circle, which may lead to a new leader engaging in peace negotiations regarding the ongoing conflict.
Sikorski expressed that there is a possibility of a shift in leadership within the Kremlin, suggesting that if Putin were to be ousted, his successor might take over the peace talks. He pointed out historical instances where wars have concluded under different leadership.
In his remarks, Sikorski referenced the historical precedent of leaders being deposed by their own close associates. He stated, “Here in Rome, I do not need to explain how many emperors were removed by their own Praetorian Guard… Dictators always realize this too late.”
The Polish diplomat further elaborated on the mindset of dictators, noting that for Putin, continuing an unsuccessful war may appear to be a safer option than ending it without a clear victory. He remarked, “The problem for dictators who have entered into war is that if they stop the conflict without a clear victory, their power is at risk.”
Sikorski also highlighted concerns regarding the flow of information within the Russian military, suggesting that they do not provide Putin with a complete picture of the situation on the front lines. This lack of transparency, he argued, exacerbates the strategic deadlock faced by the Kremlin.
