NATO Secretary General Affirms Continued U.S. Military Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

At the recent 34th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the ongoing supply of American weaponry to Ukraine under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL). He welcomed the new contributions announced by participating states during the meeting.

Rutte noted that Russia is facing significant challenges on the battlefield, making a victory for President Vladimir Putin increasingly elusive. He highlighted reports suggesting that Putin is becoming aware of the difficult state of the Russian economy. Rutte emphasized the importance of continued support, stating, “The security of Ukraine is our security.”

In response to inquiries about Ukraine’s ambitious goal of raising $15 billion for military supplies through PURL this year, Rutte expressed optimism regarding the funding for critical military assistance. He stated, “I am optimistic that we will be able to fund the flow of aid from the United States, including critical military support for Ukraine, such as air defense systems.”

Rutte acknowledged the need for a more equitable distribution of the burden among NATO member states, noting that currently, a limited number of countries shoulder the primary responsibility. However, he pointed out that positive changes are emerging in this regard.

Addressing concerns about potential depletion of U.S. weapon stocks due to conflicts in the Middle East, Rutte mentioned a widespread understanding of the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure replenishment of all military supplies. He stated, “We need to ramp up defense industrial production, but at the same time, we must ensure that Ukraine has everything it needs to continue the fight. There is broad understanding on this issue on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The PURL initiative, established in the summer of 2025, facilitates the transfer of American weaponry to Ukraine funded by European nations, with NATO coordinating the process. According to Ukrainian authorities, contributions to the PURL program amounted to $4.3 billion in 2025, with nearly $1.5 billion raised in December alone.

During his recent visit to Washington, Rutte reiterated that despite ongoing conflicts, including the war in Iran, critical military equipment continues to flow to Ukraine. He reported that since the launch of PURL, the initiative has provided approximately 75% of all missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot missile batteries and 90% of munitions used in other air defense systems.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed continued U.S. military support for Ukraine during the 34th Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting. He expressed optimism about funding for Ukraine's military needs and highlighted the importance of equitable burden-sharing among NATO members.
