The German government has announced a commitment of €300 million to support a Czech initiative aimed at supplying ammunition to Ukraine. This announcement was made by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius following a meeting in Berlin with Czech Defence Minister Jaromír Zuna.
Pistorius emphasized that this funding would enable the procurement of approximately 50,000 artillery shells for Ukraine, describing the initiative as a significant tool for assistance. He also expressed gratitude to the Czech Republic for its continued efforts in this regard.
Germany has emerged as the largest foreign donor to this initiative, having contributed a total of €1 billion last year. Zuna remarked on Germany’s crucial role as a supplier of military equipment and ammunition, highlighting the country’s substantial contribution to European security.
In response to the announcement, Czech MP and former Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský stated that the decision was positive news and urged Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to reassess his stance on providing ammunition to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The Czech initiative for ammunition supply was launched in 2024 under the previous administration of Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who presented the proposal during a meeting of European leaders in February of that year, with the support of President Petr Pavel. The project focuses on sourcing large-caliber ammunition from global markets, facilitating its purchase with partner funds, and ensuring its transport to Ukraine.
Despite initial discussions within the current coalition government regarding the potential dissolution of the initiative, a decision was ultimately made to maintain the Czech administrative and organizational role, although the state will no longer participate in the procurement process itself.
Germany's €300 million commitment to a Czech initiative for supplying ammunition to Ukraine marks a significant step in military support. The funding aims to procure 50,000 artillery shells, reinforcing Germany's position as a leading donor in this effort.
