Germany Allocates €300 Million for Czech Initiative to Supply Ammunition to Ukraine

Germany has committed €300 million to support a Czech initiative aimed at supplying ammunition to Ukraine, which is currently engaged in ongoing conflict. This funding is expected to facilitate the procurement of approximately 50,000 rounds of ammunition for Ukrainian forces.

The announcement was made by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius following discussions with his Czech counterpart, Jaromir Zuna. Zuna emphasized Germany’s significant role as a supplier of military equipment and ammunition, highlighting the responsibility the country has assumed for European security.

“Germany plays a crucial role as a supplier of military equipment and ammunition and, together with our defense industry, makes a significant contribution to the security of Europe,” Zuna stated during his visit to Berlin.

Following their meeting, Pistorius underscored the importance of the additional €300 million as a vital tool in supporting Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian aggression for five years. He expressed gratitude to the Czech Republic for its ongoing commitment to this initiative.

Pistorius noted that Germany is currently the largest foreign donor to the ammunition initiative, having contributed a total of €1 billion in the previous year. The initiative was launched in 2024, following a proposal from then-Prime Minister Petr Fiala, which was presented to European leaders in February of that year, and supported by President Petr Pavel.

The current ruling coalition in the Czech Republic, comprising the parties Action of Dissatisfied Citizens 2011 (ANO), Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), and Motorists for Themselves, initially considered scaling back the initiative. However, they ultimately decided to maintain the administrative and organizational role of the Czech Republic, opting out of direct involvement in procurement. This decision has faced criticism from opposition politicians.

“Germany’s move is excellent news. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš should reconsider his position and also provide ammunition to Ukraine against Russia,” stated former Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský.

In addition to the ammunition initiative, Pistorius announced plans to procure around 200,000 pistols for the Bundeswehr from the Czech arms manufacturer, valued at €56 million.

On April 16, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterated that alliance members should continue funding the purchase of artillery ammunition for Ukraine as part of the Czech initiative.

Czech Initiative for Ammunition Supply to Ukraine

With support from its allies, the Czech Republic has launched an initiative to acquire ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine from third countries.

On February 17, 2024, President Petr Pavel announced at the Munich Conference that the Czech Republic had identified 800,000 shells available for purchase outside the EU. He clarified that these munitions could be delivered within weeks, contingent on securing funding.

By February 2025, President Pavel reported that the Czech initiative for procuring artillery shells for Ukraine from third countries had enabled the provision of at least 1.6 million rounds of ammunition.

Germany's recent allocation of €300 million to a Czech initiative aims to bolster ammunition supplies for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. This funding is part of broader European efforts to support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.
