The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has announced that 95% of the drones procured by the State Procurement Agency for Defense Forces are produced domestically. This marks a significant shift in the country’s defense procurement strategy, emphasizing local manufacturing capabilities.
According to the Ministry, last year saw a notable increase in the acquisition of drone systems, surpassing that of ammunition purchases for the first time. This trend appears to be continuing into the current year, reflecting a growing reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within the military.
A key factor in the expansion of Ukraine’s drone market has been the launch of the DOT-Chain Defence weapons marketplace. This platform has established a market model where procurement decisions are made directly by end-users, specifically military units engaged in combat.
“The system has fostered competition among manufacturers, created incentives for product improvement, and enabled accurate demand forecasting and production scaling,” the Ministry stated.
As a result of these developments, the Ukrainian drone market has significantly increased its production capabilities, now fulfilling the majority of procurement needs in this category. The Ministry highlighted that the competitive environment has not only enhanced product quality but also allowed for better alignment between military needs and manufacturing outputs.
This shift towards domestic drone production is part of a broader strategy to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing military challenges. The emphasis on local resources is seen as a way to ensure quicker responses to operational demands and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.
