Ukrainian President Urges EU to Release €6 Billion for Defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on European leaders to unblock €6 billion from the European Peace Facility, intended to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

During a recent address to the European Council, Zelensky emphasized the urgency of accessing these funds, stating, “It is crucial that the European Peace Facility funds are released now. This €6 billion is significant and should be used for measures that effectively protect lives—those that have proven their effectiveness in this war. Please support the swift utilization of these funds so that no life is lost due to delays.”

Zelensky outlined potential uses for the funds, including enhancing air defense systems, procuring long-range artillery, and other capabilities that have already demonstrated success in the conflict. He added, “If we could use this money to protect our energy infrastructure, it would be beneficial. Of course, we want to end this war before winter—through diplomacy and pressure on Russia. But we understand who we are dealing with. Putin represents war.”

The president also warned that if the conflict persists, Ukraine will require additional winter aid. He specified that this package should include energy resources such as gas and diesel, as well as essential energy equipment, alongside a missile supply of at least 300 missiles for the winter. “Let’s prepare for this now while maximizing our diplomatic efforts. We need concrete solutions,” he stated.

Prior to Zelensky’s remarks, the European Commission was unable to confirm reports regarding Hungary’s decision to unblock €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility, which is designated for military support to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the EU to release €6 billion from the European Peace Facility to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities. He outlined the need for immediate action to secure funds for critical military resources and energy infrastructure as the conflict with Russia continues.
