EU Council President Advocates for Diplomatic Channels with Russia

The President of the European Council, António Costa, has emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic channels with Russia to safeguard the interests of the European Union (EU). This statement was made during a recent meeting with EU leaders, where Costa addressed inquiries regarding his recent contacts with Kremlin officials.

According to reports, Costa explained that he has instructed his administration to establish a diplomatic channel with Russia. The intention behind this initiative is to ensure readiness for future interactions that may arise under favorable conditions. He clarified that these contacts have been brief and do not involve substantive discussions or negotiations; rather, they serve as a means for diplomats to fulfill their roles.

“Regarding the recent short diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin, the President explained that he tasked his administration with opening a diplomatic channel with Russia. The goal was to be prepared to protect the interests of the EU when the appropriate moment arises. These are short contacts without exchanges of views on the substance of issues and without negotiations — just diplomats doing their job,” a source stated.

Costa also highlighted the necessity for the EU to be ready to take responsibility when conditions allow for engagement with Russia, aiming to facilitate a just and lasting peace that protects European interests.

This call for a proactive diplomatic stance aligns with requests from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has urged Europe to play a more active role in diplomatic efforts.

“The most important thing is for Europeans to continue acting cohesively regarding how to interact with Russia and what the EU’s position should be. The role of the President of the European Council is to ensure EU unity. Several leaders also noted that, according to the Treaties, the President is the natural representative of EU interests,” the source added.

In related developments, EU leaders have agreed to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia for an additional 12 months, a departure from the usual six-month period.

António Costa, President of the European Council, has outlined the need for diplomatic channels with Russia to protect EU interests. His comments come as EU leaders agree to extend sanctions against Russia for a year.
