Romanian President Confirms Drone Attack Investigation in Galați

The Romanian President, Nicușor Dan, has announced that investigators have determined the amount of explosives carried by a Russian drone that struck a residential building in Galați. According to preliminary assessments, the drone was equipped with at least 30 kilograms of conventional explosives.

During a statement made alongside police and the Criminal Investigation Department, Dan confirmed that an investigation is underway, with samples from the incident site currently being analyzed. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “I was with the police and the Criminal Investigation Department, and the investigation is ongoing; samples from the scene are being analyzed. According to their estimates, there were at least 30 kg of conventional explosives involved.”

In light of the drone attack, President Dan expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of intercepting drones with aircraft, suggesting that this method is not the most efficient. He noted that Romania is actively working on developing more advanced countermeasures. “Using aircraft is the least optimal method. We have made significant progress in detecting them and some progress in developing ground systems capable of defending against them. This is an ongoing process,” he explained.

On the same day, President Dan announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța and the expulsion of its consul. In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova threatened retaliatory measures.

The Romanian government is investigating a drone attack in Galați, confirming the drone carried at least 30 kilograms of explosives. President Nicușor Dan has called for improved counter-drone measures and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța amidst rising tensions.
