Japan Joins US Arms Procurement Program for Ukraine with $14.7 Million Contribution

Japan has officially joined the US arms procurement initiative for Ukraine, contributing approximately $14.7 million through the PURL mechanism. This announcement was made by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The funding will support a package under PURL that focuses exclusively on non-lethal equipment. The specific items to be supplied will be coordinated with NATO.

Officials in Tokyo indicated that this assistance is likely to align with Japan’s previous contributions to NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine.

In a statement, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, noting that the country has been a significant ally since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“We greatly appreciate all the support provided to us. I also thank all partners who continue to contribute to PURL,” Zelensky stated.

He highlighted that contributions to the program have come from various nations this year, including Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Bulgaria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Iceland. Additionally, some contributions have been made privately, bringing the total to approximately $1.5 billion since the beginning of the year, with 28 countries now participating in PURL.

The PURL initiative enables NATO member states and partners to finance the acquisition of American equipment through Alliance mechanisms for subsequent transfer to Ukraine.

Japan's recent $14.7 million contribution to the US arms procurement program for Ukraine marks a significant step in international support for the country amid ongoing conflict. This funding will focus on non-lethal equipment, further strengthening Japan's collaboration with NATO.
