Polish President Criticizes Ukraine’s Zelensky Over Military Naming Decision

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for naming a unit of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Nawrocki’s remarks suggest that this decision could undermine Ukraine’s standing in Europe, prompting him to propose revoking Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honor.

Speaking to reporters, Nawrocki accused Zelensky’s decision of potentially aiding Russian propaganda and asserted that it indicates Ukraine should not be allowed to join the European Union without conditions. He stated,

“President Zelensky has shown that, mentally, Ukraine is not ready to be part of the European family, given its glorification of bandits and murderers from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.”

Despite this criticism, Nawrocki emphasized that Poland remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, which he described as a strategic priority. However, he expressed concern over the implications of such decisions on Polish-Ukrainian relations, stating,

“This is not how relationships between nations are built.”

Nawrocki announced that the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle would convene on June 8, where he will propose discussing the potential revocation of Zelensky’s award. While he noted that the final decision rests with him, he insisted that the Chapter must meet to deliberate.

In response to the escalating tensions, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged a focus on the future rather than dwelling on historical grievances. He remarked,

“If we argue over the past, someone else will win the future. The President of Ukraine needs to understand this, as do the Poles. It’s not too late!”

The Ukrainian presidential office has not yet commented on the statements made by Polish officials, and President Zelensky has not issued a response.

In April 2023, former Polish President Andrzej Duda awarded Zelensky the Order of the White Eagle during a visit to Warsaw, recognizing his significant contributions to Poland’s development.

On May 26, Zelensky issued a decree to honor the Special Operations Center “North” of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces with the title “in the name of the Heroes of the UPA,” aiming to restore historical traditions within the national military.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has criticized Ukraine's decision to name a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, suggesting it jeopardizes Ukraine's EU aspirations. He proposed revoking President Zelensky's Order of the White Eagle, while Polish leaders emphasize the need for unity over historical disputes.
