Zelensky Engages European Leaders Amid U.S.-Russia Negotiation Developments

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently held discussions with leaders from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts related to the U.S.-Russia negotiations. In a video address on May 22, he indicated that updates on U.S. readiness for talks with Russia could emerge by the end of the week.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of European involvement in the negotiation process, stating, “We talked with our European friends: Britain, France, Germany, in the E3 format. By the end of the week, there may be an update on the Americans’ readiness.” He noted that the situation surrounding Iran is currently a focal point for the U.S., which may influence the timing and nature of discussions.

The president reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to intensifying diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a swift resolution to the conflict. He remarked, “The question is how we will together bring the situation to a peace that is reliable and dignified.”

Zelensky also briefed the European leaders on the current situation in Ukraine, expressing gratitude for their recognition of the achievements and positions of Ukrainian military forces. He is awaiting responses from the U.S. regarding potential formats and timelines for future meetings.

It is important to note that trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia are currently on hold. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned during a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Sweden that while previous talks have not yielded results, Washington remains open to new meetings if they prove productive. He dismissed rumors of U.S. pressure on Kyiv regarding the negotiation process.

Earlier, on May 20, Zelensky had expressed hope for a return to trilateral talks that would include European participation, subsequently proposing the revival of the E3 format for peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Zelensky discussed diplomatic efforts with European leaders regarding U.S.-Russia negotiations, emphasizing the need for European involvement. He is awaiting updates on U.S. readiness for talks while reiterating Ukraine's commitment to achieving a dignified peace.
