On the morning of May 7, two drones reportedly originating from Russia fell in Latvia, according to the country’s National Armed Forces. Military, police, and rescue teams are currently responding to the incidents.
The National Armed Forces have enhanced air defense capabilities along the eastern border by deploying additional units. Command officials noted that as long as Russian aggression continues in Ukraine, similar incidents involving foreign drones entering or approaching Latvian airspace remain a possibility.
Local news agency Delfi reported that the State Fire and Rescue Service received multiple alerts about a potential fire at a fuel depot in the southeastern city of Rezekne. Although no open flames were observed, firefighters took precautions to cool one of the storage tanks.
The mayor of Rezekne, Guntars Skudra, confirmed that one of the drones landed on the premises of the East-West Transit company, striking an empty oil tank.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian military launched a total of 102 drones during the night of May 7, with 92 of them intercepted in the northern and eastern regions of Ukraine.
Latvia has reported two drone incidents believed to be linked to Russian military activity, prompting enhanced air defense measures. Local authorities are investigating the incidents, which coincide with a larger pattern of drone usage by Russia in the region.
