The Kirishi Oil Refinery, known as Kinef, located in Kirishi, Leningrad Oblast, has ceased operations following a drone strike attributed to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to reports from Reuters on May 5.
Sources indicate that three out of the four primary oil processing units sustained damage due to the attack, although estimates regarding the duration of repairs remain unclear. The refinery, which is the largest in the European part of Russia, ranks second nationwide after the Omsk Refinery.
Official representatives from Surgutneftegaz, the parent company of Kinef, have not commented on the incident. Earlier on the same day, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed the targeting of infrastructure at the Kirishi refinery, noting that the strike resulted in a fire on the premises.
In 2025, Kinef processed 18 million tons of oil, accounting for approximately 7% of Russia’s total oil refining capacity. Throughout the ongoing conflict, the facility has faced multiple drone attacks, with the most significant disruption occurring on March 26, 2026.
