Confidential schematics of the anticipated iPhone Fold have surfaced online, indicating a significantly thinner design compared to earlier prototypes. According to the leaked documents, the device’s thickness when folded is projected to be just 9.4 mm, a notable reduction from previous estimates of 11 mm.
This slim profile positions the iPhone Fold among the thinnest foldable devices available, comparable to offerings from Samsung and Honor, and only slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro.
When unfolded, the chassis is expected to measure approximately 4.7 mm in thickness. However, the overall profile of the device will be affected by a prominent camera block, which could increase the maximum thickness to 13.9 mm.
The leaked drawings also suggest several unconventional design choices for Apple:
- Punch-hole Camera: Instead of the traditional Dynamic Island, the internal display will feature a small hole for the selfie camera, resembling designs commonly found in Android smartphones.
- Absence of Face ID: The placement of the sensor in the left corner implies that Face ID may not be available in the unfolded mode.
- Return of Touch ID: A fingerprint scanner is expected to be integrated into the side power button, which is considered a practical solution for the foldable format.
- Camera Configuration: The rear panel will include a “plateau” housing two 48 MP sensors, one for the main camera and another for ultra-wide shots.
With dimensions of 167.59 × 120.59 mm when unfolded, the device is effectively positioned as a compact tablet. Insider reports suggest that the smartphone will be available in two classic colors: black and white.
Despite the complexities associated with its construction, Apple aims to unveil the iPhone Fold in September 2026, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro flagship line. Notably, the company may entirely phase out budget models this year, focusing solely on the premium segment.
An official announcement of the new device is anticipated during Apple’s autumn presentation. While the technical schematics appear convincing, the design may still undergo changes before the release.
Leaked schematics of the iPhone Fold reveal a thinner design and several innovative features, positioning it as a competitive foldable device. The launch is scheduled for September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.
