Ukrainian air defense forces are successfully intercepting over 90% of enemy drones, but President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the need for enhanced protection against ballistic missile strikes.
During a recent address, Zelensky reported that Russia launched approximately 1,900 attack drones, nearly 1,400 guided aerial bombs, and around 60 missiles of various types against Ukraine in the past week. He highlighted the significance of timely contributions from international partners to the PURL program and the approval of a new EU sanctions package, along with a €90 billion support package in Cyprus.
The president noted, “Our air defense system already demonstrates a very high interception rate for drones—over 90%. We need to work on increasing this percentage consistently, not only for drones but also for ballistic threats.” He further stated that every additional missile supply for air defense translates into saved lives and better protection for cities and critical infrastructure.
On April 15, Zelensky had previously mentioned a critical shortage of Patriot missile systems, warning that Ukraine would face even less weaponry if the conflict continues. Ahead of the upcoming Ramstein meeting, Ukraine has coordinated with Belgium and Spain to bolster air defense and expand aviation support for the Ukrainian Air Force.
Ukrainian air defense is achieving significant success in intercepting enemy drones but requires further enhancements to counter ballistic missile threats. President Zelensky has called for additional support from international partners to strengthen defenses amid ongoing attacks.
