EU Approves €90 Billion Financial Package for Ukraine

The European Union has approved a substantial financial package totaling €90 billion for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering the country’s defense and infrastructure.

This funding, which is set to be distributed over a two-year period, will be utilized for various critical needs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined the intended uses of the funds, which include:

  • Domestic production of weapons;
  • Purchasing arms from allies that Ukraine does not currently manufacture;
  • Preparing the energy sector and critical infrastructure for the upcoming winter;
  • Meeting social obligations to citizens.

“This European package will strengthen our army, enhance Ukraine’s resilience, and enable us to fulfill our social commitments to the Ukrainian people as mandated by law,” Zelensky stated.

European Council President Antonio Costa confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the EU’s strategy regarding Ukraine focuses on two main areas: reinforcing Ukraine itself and increasing pressure on Russia. “Promises made, promises kept,” he remarked.

Costa highlighted that the EU has made significant progress on both fronts by unblocking the €90 billion loan, which will provide financial and military support through 2026-2027, and by adopting the 20th package of sanctions against Russia to limit its military capabilities.

He added, “Europe is steadfast, united, and unwavering in its support for Ukraine.” The first tranche of the funds is expected to be disbursed as early as May or June, with Zelensky indicating that efforts are underway to expedite this process.

“We are working hard to ensure that we receive the first tranche as quickly as possible, aiming for the end of May or early June,” he noted.
