Kyiv to Increase Public Transport Fares Nearly Fourfold Starting July 15

Starting July 15, the cost of a single journey on public transport in Kyiv will rise to 30 hryvnias, nearly quadrupling the current fare of 8 hryvnias, as announced by the Kyiv City State Administration on May 18.

The new pricing structure will include discounts for passengers who frequently use the city’s transport system, based on the number of trips purchased on a transport card:

  • 1–9 trips — 30 UAH
  • 10–19 trips — 28.90 UAH
  • 20–29 trips — 27.80 UAH
  • 30–39 trips — 26.60 UAH
  • 40–49 trips — 25.50 UAH
  • 50 trips — 25 UAH

Currently, purchasing 50 trips costs 6.50 hryvnias per ride. For those opting for monthly passes, the fare per trip will range from approximately 23.3 to 23.6 hryvnias. Students will receive a 50% discount on monthly passes, while schoolchildren will ride for free during the academic year and at a 75% discount during the summer.

The city also plans to introduce a transfer ticket priced at 60 hryvnias, allowing unlimited transfers between the metro and surface transport within a 90-minute window. This initiative is inspired by transport systems in European cities, though its feasibility in Kyiv, where transport schedules are often disrupted by air raid alerts, remains to be seen.

Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko instructed city departments in early April to prepare calculations justifying the fare increase, citing the need for economic rationale. He noted that public transport fares in Kyiv are the lowest in Ukraine and have not been adjusted since 2018. Rising costs for fuel, electricity, materials, and logistics have compelled the city to align transport fares with economic realities.

Klitschko highlighted that the city’s public transport system is subsidized, with projected expenses reaching 12 billion hryvnias by 2026.

Kyiv will increase public transport fares starting July 15, with a new pricing structure aimed at regular users. The mayor cites economic pressures and the need for a fare adjustment after several years without changes.
