The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has taken action regarding Russian gymnast Sofia Ilteryakova following her refusal to face the Ukrainian flag during the national anthem at a World Cup event in Bulgaria. This decision comes after significant backlash from the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation.
At the season’s opening World Cup in Sofia, Ukrainian gymnast Taisiya Onufriychuk achieved notable success, securing three gold medals in individual events and winning the all-around competition. During the award ceremony for the hoop event, Ilteryakova, competing as a neutral athlete, deliberately turned her back as the Ukrainian anthem played.
In response to this incident, the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation called for Ilteryakova to lose her neutral athlete status. However, the FIG’s special committee opted for a less severe measure, issuing a warning to the Russian gymnast. While her neutral status remains intact, FIG has stated that any future violations could lead to more severe consequences.
The FIG’s statement highlighted that turning away during the Ukrainian anthem could be perceived as inconsistent with the expected conduct of neutral athletes. The organization acknowledged the incident as a reminder of the need to clarify the protocols governing award ceremonies in line with the Olympic Charter.
“This unfortunate incident underscores the need to refine the protocol that governs our award ceremonies in accordance with the Olympic Charter. We are working on optimizing how this protocol is applied and communicated to ensure compliance in the future,” stated the FIG.
