Ukrainian President Discusses Regional Cooperation in Syria

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently visited Syria, where he engaged in a trilateral dialogue involving representatives from Ukraine, Syria, and Turkey. This meeting marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing regional security.

During his visit, Zelensky emphasized the importance of building new relationships and exploring opportunities for collaboration. He stated, “We are constructing new relations, new opportunities, and expanding our efforts for security.” The discussions covered a range of topics, including security and defense issues, the regional implications of events surrounding Iran, and potential energy and infrastructure partnerships among the nations involved.

Additionally, Zelensky highlighted the ongoing efforts to address food security, which has become a pressing concern in the region. He noted that the talks also focused on strategies to mitigate the effects of the ongoing war and the negotiation process regarding Russia’s military actions against Ukraine.

On April 5, Zelensky met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, where they agreed to collaborate on enhancing security and development opportunities for their respective societies. Zelensky expressed gratitude for Syria’s support regarding the conflict with Russia, indicating a mutual interest in sharing military and security experiences.

Before his visit to Syria, Zelensky was in Istanbul, where he held discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. These meetings are part of Ukraine’s broader diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering real security and economic cooperation in the region.

As the situation in Eastern Europe and the Middle East continues to evolve, Zelensky’s diplomatic engagements reflect Ukraine’s strategic approach to building alliances and addressing regional challenges.
