The Ukrainian military has introduced a new fleet of drone-operated boats, dubbed Barracuda, designed for precision strikes against enemy positions. Capable of carrying up to 300 kilograms of explosives, these vessels are remotely controlled from distances of up to 20,000 kilometers.
Developed by a specialized unit within the Ukrainian Navy, the Barracuda boats are modular, allowing for various types of weaponry, including powerful mines and grenade launchers. This innovation aims to enhance operational effectiveness by striking targets where they are least expected.
During a recent test in southern Ukraine, reporters from Ukrinform witnessed the Barracuda in action. The atmosphere among the crew was lively as they prepared for their mission, showcasing both camaraderie and professionalism. The unit’s commander, known by the call sign “Cop,” shared his background as a former police officer who volunteered for military service on the first day of the conflict.
“We use the boats as kamikaze units. Fortunately, these missions are now carried out by machines rather than people. The boats do not return from their assignments, and we deploy new technology each time,” said Cop.
According to Cop, the Barracuda’s ability to be controlled remotely minimizes risks to personnel. The boat is equipped with artificial intelligence, advanced tracking systems, and a speed of up to 100 kilometers per hour. It can also deploy FPV drones for additional reconnaissance and attack capabilities.
“Everything operates remotely; it fires, explodes, and destroys the enemy,” Cop added with a smile.
When asked about notable successes, Cop remarked that every mission is significant, emphasizing the destructive power of the Barracuda, which can deliver an explosive impact equivalent to five Iranian-made Shahed drones.
The crew of the Barracuda includes a navigator skilled in navigating waterways and avoiding enemy countermeasures, as well as a second pilot and personnel responsible for loading explosives. Cop stressed the importance of extensive training for pilots, noting the complexity and responsibility involved in operating such advanced technology.
Despite the challenges, the team remains focused and dedicated. Cop noted that they have not encountered similar technology in use by Russian forces.
Each member of the unit shares a strong bond, with backgrounds ranging from business to law enforcement. Cop reminisced about the early days of developing drone boats, recalling a particularly harrowing experience when they lost connection with an early prototype near enemy positions. He and a comrade attempted to retrieve it, facing significant danger before narrowly escaping.
“When I finally reached the shore, I wanted to kiss the ground,” he recalled.
Another crew member, known as Max, serves as a pilot for the Barracuda. He described the adrenaline rush of operating the boat from afar, sometimes spending up to ten hours at the controls. Max has been in the military for a year and a half, driven by a desire to protect his family and homeland.
Supporting the mission is Kostiantyn, a member of the fire support group, who previously worked as a cemetery director. He brings a unique perspective to the unit, emphasizing the importance of humor and resilience in the face of adversity.
“I am very happy when we accomplish our mission. My parents were in occupation, and I didn’t know if they were alive or dead. I feel fortunate to be able to send our enemies back to where they belong,” Kostiantyn said.
Another team member, known as Captain, recounted a pivotal moment when their earlier, less advanced boat successfully disrupted a Russian advance by detonating explosives among enemy forces. This early success affirmed their strategy and boosted morale.
As the conflict continues, the Barracuda represents not just technological advancement but also the ingenuity and determination of the Ukrainian military. With these drone boats, they aim to redefine the battlefield and keep their adversaries on edge.
In this war, victory hinges not only on strength but also on creativity. The Barracuda exemplifies how innovative thinking can transform ideas into effective weapons, ensuring that the enemy cannot feel secure even in previously safe zones.
