On March 17, Ukraine and the United Kingdom formalized their commitment to enhanced bilateral cooperation in security and defense industries by signing a declaration in London. This agreement was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
During their discussions, President Zelensky described the signed declaration as a significant step toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. He informed Prime Minister Starmer about the current situation on the front lines, including Russian attacks and Ukraine’s defense needs.
“I updated him on the frontline situation, Russian assaults, and our requirements to protect lives. We discussed the development of joint defense production and the enhancement of Ukraine’s air defense with additional missiles for our air defense systems. We also touched upon the situation in the Middle East,” Zelensky stated.
The declaration outlines various areas of cooperation between Ukraine and the UK, focusing on bolstering collective defense readiness, enhancing deterrence, and promoting long-term stability and security in Europe.
Key components of the agreement include mutual security commitments, partnerships in defense industries and technologies, the integration of Ukraine’s combat experience to develop modern defense capabilities, joint military training, and the exchange of security information and data. Additionally, the document stipulates conditions for the implementation and coordination of these commitments.
The strategic dialogue between Kyiv and London encompasses eight areas: security, trade, transport, energy, justice, science, culture, and foreign policy. Through this dialogue, Zelensky and Starmer aimed to explore mutual cooperation and establish strategic priorities for the upcoming year.
Upon his arrival in London, President Zelensky also met with King Charles III and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. He delivered a speech before members of the UK Parliament, further emphasizing the importance of international support for Ukraine.
