Russian military units are increasingly deploying low-cost reconnaissance drones, known as “Bлискавка,” to enhance their surveillance capabilities on the battlefield. This shift comes as a response to the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense systems, which have been successfully targeting more expensive UAVs.
According to Defense Minister advisor Sergey Beskrestnov, the use of these drones has surged, with reports indicating that up to ten images of the “Bлискавка” drones are received daily. Previously, Russian forces relied on pricier drones such as the “Орлан,” “Зал,” and “Суперка,” which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
The high loss rate of these expensive UAVs due to Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems has prompted Russian forces to seek more economical alternatives. The “Bлискавка” drones are equipped with standard configurations, including a SIYI ZR10 camera and an AI module from SIY, operating on a frequency of 1300-1500 MHz with a power output of 2×2 watts. The primary differences among these drones lie in their Ethernet switches, as noted by Beskrestnov.
Beskrestnov emphasized that despite their lower cost, the widespread use of the “Bлискавка” drones allows Russian troops to conduct reconnaissance operations with minimal expenses. This strategy aims to mitigate losses while maintaining ongoing surveillance efforts.
Russian forces are transitioning to cheaper reconnaissance drones to counteract losses from Ukrainian air defenses. This strategic shift allows for continued surveillance with reduced costs.
