Ukraine Prepared for Extended Conflict, Seeks End to Hostilities

Ukraine is ready to continue its fight for several more years, but insists that military actions driven by territorial and resource disputes must come to an end. Brigadier General Mykola Pyvnenko emphasized the need to cease violence over land and resources, stating, “We can certainly fight for several more years. However, wars should ultimately end. Killing people for territories and resources is incomprehensible to us; this must stop.”

Pyvnenko noted that the Ukrainian people are weary of the ongoing war, expressing a collective desire for peace. He raised critical questions about the terms of any potential ceasefire, suggesting that while many would agree to halt hostilities, the conditions must be carefully considered. “The main question for us is at what cost? We will not give up any territory,” he asserted.

To facilitate an end to the conflict, Ukraine is engaged in trilateral negotiations with the United States and Russia, aiming for a swift and fair resolution. Despite some progress, several unresolved issues remain, particularly concerning territorial matters.

In parallel, Ukraine is working with its partners to establish security guarantees that would come into effect in the event of a renewed Russian invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously stated that concrete security assurances could help set a definitive timeline for concluding the war, which poses a threat not only to Ukraine but to all of Europe.

However, recent polling indicates a growing skepticism among Ukrainians regarding the prospect of a quick resolution to the conflict, with only one in five believing it could conclude by mid-2026.

Ukraine is prepared for a prolonged conflict but insists on ending violence over territorial disputes. Ongoing negotiations with the U.S. and Russia aim for a fair resolution, though public sentiment reflects skepticism about a swift end to the war.
