China Raises Concerns Over Japan’s NATO Involvement

China has expressed apprehension regarding Japan’s decision to send Self-Defense Force personnel to participate in a NATO mission aimed at coordinating support for Ukraine. This move has sparked criticism from Beijing, which perceives it as an escalation of Japan’s military activities.

Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that China’s government views Japan’s actions negatively, suggesting that Tokyo is consistently expanding its military role and pushing forward its remilitarization efforts. He emphasized the need for the international community to pay close attention to such trends.

According to reports from Japanese media, the Japanese government plans to dispatch four officers to a military base in Germany. Their mission will involve familiarizing themselves with NATO-led assistance programs for Ukraine.

Lin cautioned that Japan’s involvement in NATO missions could potentially lead to the deployment of Japanese troops in actual combat operations. He argued that this scenario contradicts Japan’s pacifist commitments established after World War II.

Furthermore, Lin pointed out that the establishment of NATO-led infrastructure could adversely affect regional stability. He remarked that these developments do not align with Japan’s self-portrayal as a peaceful nation.

China has criticized Japan's decision to send personnel to a NATO mission supporting Ukraine, viewing it as a threat to regional stability and a departure from Japan's pacifist stance. The move raises concerns about the potential for Japanese troops to engage in combat operations, challenging Japan's post-war commitments.
