Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed disappointment over the United States’ refusal to grant licenses for missile production, which he believes could have significantly bolstered Europe’s air defense capabilities.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky noted that discussions with Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov focused on the urgent need for stable supply chains and collaboration with international partners. He emphasized the importance of enhancing Europe’s defense industry, particularly in missile production.
“We will discuss the necessity for Europe to develop its own missile production for air defense. All types of missiles that are genuinely needed should be produced. There are already some steps being taken, such as expanding production capabilities, but the pace of this work is still insufficient. The potential production volumes also deserve to be increased,” Zelensky stated.
The president recalled that Ukraine had raised this issue with the U.S. several years ago, pointing out the need for sufficient missile production facilities in Europe.
“Ukraine has been discussing this with America for years, particularly regarding the need to establish adequate missile production in Europe, including for systems like the Patriots. There were promises of licenses, but ultimately, the U.S. did not follow through. We proposed production both in Ukraine and in collaboration with NATO partners in the region, such as Romania and Poland,” he added.
Zelensky believes that such initiatives could strengthen not only Ukraine but all of Europe.
“I am confident that Europe will ultimately be able to secure the necessary volumes and strength of defense. However, it would be significantly better for everyone if this outcome could be achieved more swiftly,” he concluded.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the U.S. for not allowing missile production licenses to Europe, which he argues could enhance regional air defense. He emphasized the need for Europe to establish its own missile production capabilities to ensure security.
