The Russian military is increasingly depending on foreign fighters as it faces significant casualties in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov informed European counterparts this week that Ukraine has inflicted more losses on Russian forces than Moscow has been able to recruit in the past two months.
This situation has led to a reliance on thousands of foreign combatants, including recruits from countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Cuba, Nigeria, and Senegal. British Defense Secretary John Healy noted that many of these individuals are often misled or coerced into joining, frequently without realizing they are being sent to the front lines in Ukraine.
Healy estimated that around 17,000 North Korean soldiers are currently engaged in combat alongside Russian forces. Recent reports from Bloomberg indicated that in January, Russia suffered approximately 9,000 more casualties than it could replenish.
According to Western officials, Russia’s total military losses, including both killed and wounded, are projected to reach 415,000 by 2025, slightly lower than the 430,000 reported in 2022. In December alone, Russian casualties averaged 1,130 per day, totaling around 35,000 for the month, largely attributed to successful Ukrainian drone operations.
Western analysts believe that Russia may continue its military operations in Ukraine throughout 2026, supported by recruitment campaigns, industrial production, and assistance from countries like China. Last week, Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that the expanded use of drones has increased the combat zone along the front line by 15 to 20 kilometers.
Healy also mentioned that in certain areas, Russian casualties have risen from approximately 6 to 25 for every Ukrainian casualty. This trend, driven by the supply of additional drones to Ukraine, is viewed as a crucial factor intensifying pressure on the Russian military campaign.
Despite Russia reportedly exceeding its military recruitment targets, the number of Russian troops on the battlefield has remained stable at 712,000 for the past six months. Healy concluded that while President Putin seeks to project an image of steady progress, the reality is that his forces are weaker and increasingly reliant on foreign fighters.
