Ukrainians Express Greater Concerns Over Poverty and Education Compared to EU Citizens

Recent survey results indicate that Ukrainians are more apprehensive than the average EU citizen regarding issues such as poverty, education quality, and an aging population. Conducted by the Sociological Group “Rating,” the survey highlights the heightened concerns of Ukrainians amid ongoing conflict.

According to the findings, a significant majority of respondents, 88%, expressed worry about their children’s potential future in poverty, with 74% categorizing this concern as very serious. This level of anxiety is notably higher than the 40% of EU citizens who share similar fears.

Key Areas of Concern

In addition to poverty, the survey revealed that education quality is another pressing issue for Ukrainians, with 85% indicating concern overall and 59% expressing strong worry. Furthermore, 84% are troubled by poverty, with 57% categorizing their concern as intense.

The survey authors noted that while climate change and political divisions also concern Ukrainians, these issues are overshadowed by socio-economic and humanitarian challenges in the context of war.

Comparison with EU Citizens

Overall, the responses from Ukrainians align closely with average concerns in EU countries. However, the intensity of worry regarding poverty, education, and aging is significantly greater among Ukrainians. Conversely, concerns about political divisions and climate change are reported to be somewhat lower than the EU average.

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted from April 15 to 17 through computer-assisted telephone interviews. It involved a sample size of 1,000 respondents, selected randomly from mobile phone numbers across Ukraine, excluding temporarily occupied territories and areas lacking Ukrainian mobile service at the time of the survey. The sample is representative in terms of age, gender, and settlement type, with a margin of error of no more than 3.1% at a 95% confidence level.

Related Surveys

In previous polling by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, 57% of respondents deemed it unacceptable to transfer control of the entire Donetsk region to Russia in exchange for security guarantees. Meanwhile, 36% expressed a willingness to consider such a concession, although most acknowledged the complexity of this condition.

A recent survey reveals that Ukrainians are significantly more concerned about poverty and education than their EU counterparts, reflecting the ongoing challenges posed by the war. The findings highlight a stark contrast in the intensity of these worries, especially regarding children's futures.
