Ukrainian Veterans Can Now Access Digital ID in Diia App

The Ukrainian government has introduced a significant update to the Diia app, allowing veterans to access their electronic identification without needing a physical document. This enhancement was announced by Valeria Koval, Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation, who emphasized the app’s role in streamlining bureaucratic processes.

Previously, veterans were required to obtain a paper ID before it could be registered in the national database. Now, once a veteran’s status is confirmed, the electronic ID can be immediately accessed on their smartphones. Koval stated, “The electronic veteran ID in the Diia app has become autonomous, eliminating the need for a paper document.”

To access this new feature, users must log into the Diia app. If they have their ID card or international passport linked to their profile, they can easily add the digital document with just a few clicks. The system will automatically retrieve the user’s photo from government records.

Koval pointed out that the primary data source for the electronic ID is the Unified State Register of War Veterans (USRWV), which can be updated directly by military units. This ensures that as soon as a veteran’s status is entered into the system, the digital document will be available in the app. The digital format also mitigates risks associated with the loss or damage of physical documents, as the electronic version is securely stored and can be accessed anytime.

Veteran PRO Section in Diia App

The Diia app also features a section called “Veteran PRO,” which allows veterans to independently verify their status. Previously, this information required visits to public service centers or relevant institutions. Now, users can find all necessary details about their status and identification directly on their smartphones.

Koval noted that this self-service option empowers veterans to verify the accuracy of their data, ensuring they can access benefits without complications.

Eligibility for the Digital ID Service

The digital identification and access to the Veteran PRO services are available to veterans, their families, and the families of deceased defenders of Ukraine. Eligible individuals include:

  • Combatant ID holders;
  • Individuals with disabilities due to war;
  • Family members of deceased defenders;
  • War veterans;
  • Participants of the Revolution of Dignity.

Additionally, the European Union is working on a new security guarantee component focused on supporting veterans, which will be discussed during the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance stability and includes support for defense sector reforms and countering hybrid threats.

The Ukrainian government has launched a digital ID feature for veterans in the Diia app, allowing immediate access without a physical document. This update aims to simplify processes and enhance service delivery for veterans and their families.
