Italian Prime Minister Opposes Putin’s Invitation to G20 Summit

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed her opposition to the potential invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. Her remarks were reported by Ansa and Il Messaggero.

Meloni stated, “Regarding Putin’s participation in the G20, I believe that it is time for us to ask him to take steps towards us, rather than the other way around.” She emphasized that the United States has already made several conciliatory gestures towards Moscow in recent months, yet has not seen a reciprocal response.

She continued, “We and the Americans, especially over the last few months, have taken several steps towards Russia, but on the other side, we have not seen as many steps in return. I think it is now time to demand those from Russia.”

On April 23, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russia had received an invitation to the G20 summit at the highest level. Svetlana Lukash, Russia’s representative to the G20, indicated that the U.S. presidency is preparing for a possible visit from the Russian leader.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that he does not expect Putin to attend the G20 summit at his resort in Florida later this year. However, he noted that Putin’s participation could be “beneficial.”

The G20 summit is scheduled to take place in Miami in December 2026.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voiced her disapproval of inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, urging for reciprocal actions from Russia. Her comments come amid discussions about the summit's preparations and potential Russian participation.
