Ukrainian artist Brykulets, whose real name is Ivan Ishchenko, has disclosed that he accepted a teaching position at a school primarily to secure a deferment from military mobilization.
In an interview with the project “SuchTsukrMusic,” he was asked whether his motivation for working in a state institution was for the deferment or a genuine desire to teach. He responded, “Partially, what can I say?”
Brykulets is instructing students in grades 9 to 11 on songwriting. He describes his approach as therapeutic, encouraging students to express their feelings through music. “I simply tell them about songwriting as a form of leisure, that they can write anything they want… whatever troubles them… I approach this from a therapeutic perspective, to release what worries them, what keeps them awake at night,” he explained.
Previously, Brykulets mentioned that he has some background in teaching. He emphasizes a relaxed teaching style, aiming to connect with students on an equal level. He stated, “I just tell them what to do, and then they either do it or not. I advise them not to lie and to live interesting lives. They should not fabricate in their creativity but live in a way that inspires them to write. They need to feel and not be ashamed, to work on their mistakes, listen to their recordings, and understand what went wrong.”
His role as a teacher comes at a time when many in Ukraine are navigating the complexities of military service and personal aspirations.
