Ukrainian National Guard Reforms Show Promising Results Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine is advancing its military reforms with the implementation of a corps management system in its Defense Forces. This initiative, a significant aspect of wartime restructuring, has yielded positive outcomes in combat operations, particularly through the establishment of the 1st National Guard Corps ‘Azov’ and the 2nd Corps ‘Hartia’.

These units have played crucial roles in halting enemy advances in key regions such as Donetsk and Kharkiv. The ‘Azov’ unit, in coordination with other defense forces, successfully repelled enemy movements in the Dobropillia sector, reclaiming territory and inflicting substantial losses on opposing forces.

The 2nd Corps ‘Hartia’ was instrumental during the Kupiansk operation, where a collaborative command center was established with other units. This strategic move allowed Ukrainian forces to regain the initiative, disrupt enemy plans, and stabilize the situation in the area.

Reports indicate that during these operations, both ‘Azov’ and ‘Hartia’ units have destroyed thousands of enemy troops, significant amounts of Russian military equipment, and numerous drone systems.

Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, Oleksandr Pyvnenko, emphasized the transformation of these corps into cohesive entities with streamlined command structures. This change enables quicker decision-making and more effective coordination across all combat elements.

Pyvnenko noted that a key advantage of this new model is the ability to operate not as isolated units but as an integrated system, complete with their own headquarters, artillery, intelligence, and logistics.

Despite these advancements, the reform process requires further development. Challenges remain, including the need to bolster troop numbers, enhance military training, and improve coordination between corps and related units.

Looking ahead, military leadership views the expansion of the corps system as vital for strengthening frontline resilience and enhancing military management effectiveness.

This transformation aligns with public sentiment, as a recent study by Active Group revealed that 72.5% of Ukrainians support a unified command structure within the military, while over 50% advocate for the military’s apolitical stance during the conflict.

Units demonstrating systematic approaches, discipline, and coordination with command structures are gaining the highest levels of public trust. The ‘Azov’ unit leads with a trust rating of 15.2%, followed by Special Operations Forces at 14.7%, SBU ‘Alpha’ at 13.4%, ‘Hartia’ at 11.7%, and the 3rd Army Corps at 11.0%.

Ukraine's military reforms, particularly through the 'Azov' and 'Hartia' units, have shown effective results in combat operations. The ongoing transition to a corps management system aims to enhance military efficiency and public trust in the armed forces.
