A shooting incident in the Golosiivskyi district of Kiev has left several individuals dead, with the perpetrator identified as 58-year-old Dmytro Vasylchenkо. Authorities revealed that he referred to himself as a general in the Russian army.
According to Ivan Vihivskyi, head of the National Police, investigators discovered videos on Vasylchenkо’s device showing him filming himself during the shooting. “He continuously recorded himself while firing his weapon and claimed to be a general of the Russian army while walking through the building,” Vihivskyi stated, suggesting that the suspect may have had underlying mental health issues.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred on April 18, when Vasylchenkо opened fire on pedestrians before entering a supermarket and taking hostages. Special forces arrived at the scene and engaged in negotiations with him for approximately 40 minutes before ultimately neutralizing the threat.
While law enforcement officers were equipped with firearms, they did not use them during the incident, despite being authorized to do so. This decision has raised questions, especially as they left the scene with injured civilians still present.
Prior to the shooting, Vasylchenkо allegedly set fire to an apartment before emerging onto the street armed. He had a criminal history and had previously lived in the Donetsk region, having been born in Russia.
Police have indicated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between neighbors, and they have reconstructed the timeline of events leading up to the attack.
