Viktor Orbán Re-elected as Leader of Fidesz Amidst Election Setbacks

Despite a disappointing outcome in Hungary’s recent parliamentary elections, Viktor Orbán has been re-elected as the leader of the Fidesz party, the country’s main opposition group. This decision was confirmed at a party congress where 729 out of 737 delegates supported his reappointment.

Orbán, who has led Fidesz for over a decade, addressed the congress prior to the vote, stating, “I do not give up. I never, never, never, never, never give up.” He acknowledged his responsibility for the party’s electoral defeat and emphasized the need for Fidesz to evolve into a more effective opposition force.

The recent elections, held on April 12, saw a record voter turnout of 79.5%. Following the results, Orbán conceded defeat and congratulated Peter Madjar, leader of the victorious Tisza party. Madjar’s victory speech included plans to restore cooperation with NATO and the European Union, particularly with Visegrád Group countries, and he announced his intention to make an official visit to Poland.

In the aftermath of the elections, Fidesz’s popularity has reportedly declined significantly. A May survey conducted by the Publicus Institute indicated that support for the party fell from 39% to 17%. This decline has raised questions about Orbán’s political future, with some former allies publicly suggesting he should step down—a notable shift in sentiment since he returned to power in 2010.

On April 18, it was reported that the Tisza party had further solidified its position in the Hungarian parliament following the final vote count. Orbán, during a meeting with Fidesz faction members on April 28, expressed a desire to resign from his leadership role, but this proposal was not supported by party members, who decided to defer the issue until a June congress.

Viktor Orbán has been re-elected as the leader of Fidesz despite recent electoral losses. The party faces declining support, prompting discussions about its future direction and leadership.
