Viktor Orbán Proposes Resignation as Fidesz Leader Amid Party Transition

Viktor Orbán, the soon-to-be former Prime Minister of Hungary, has indicated his intention to step down as leader of the Fidesz party during a recent meeting with party members. However, the decision on his resignation has been postponed until the party congress scheduled for June 13.

According to reports from Hungarian outlets Telex and Index, the Fidesz parliamentary faction convened to discuss their next steps following their electoral defeat. Party representative Erik Banki revealed that Orbán proposed his resignation, but the final decision will be made at the upcoming congress.

When asked whether there would be other candidates for the party leadership at the congress, Banki stated that, as a democratic party, Fidesz would first undergo leadership updates in local groups before selecting delegates who could nominate candidates for various positions.

Another faction member, János Fonagy, noted that Orbán currently has no competitors for the leadership role, expressing his personal support for Orbán and suggesting that most members feel similarly.

Additionally, Fidesz representative Tamás Deutsch commented that Orbán has expressed willingness to continue leading the party as long as he retains the trust of its members.

Earlier, Orbán announced his decision to forgo his parliamentary mandate in the upcoming Hungarian parliament.

Hungarian Parliamentary Elections

The parliamentary elections held on April 12 in Hungary saw a record voter turnout of 79.5%. Orbán, who leads Fidesz, acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Péter Mádjár on his victory.

In his victory speech, Mádjár, leader of the Tisa party, outlined plans to restore cooperation with NATO and the EU, particularly with the Visegrád Group countries, and announced his first official visit to Poland.

On April 18, it was reported that Tisa, under Mádjár’s leadership, solidified its position in the Hungarian parliament following the final vote count. Official data indicates that Tisa will secure 141 seats out of 199 in the National Assembly, while Orbán’s Fidesz will have 52 lawmakers, and the far-right Mi Hazánk party will hold six seats.

Viktor Orbán has proposed stepping down as Fidesz leader, but the party will delay a decision until its June congress. Following a significant electoral defeat, the Fidesz faction is reassessing its leadership structure.
