In a series of strikes on June 12, Ukrainian defense units targeted significant oil refineries and a chemical plant in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan and Samara region. The attacks hit the “TANEKO” and “TAIF-NK” refineries, as well as the “Tolyattikauchuk” chemical plant, leading to reported fires at all three locations.
The “TANEKO” refinery is one of Russia’s largest, with a processing capacity exceeding 16 million tons of oil annually. It produces diesel, aviation fuel, and various other petroleum products. Meanwhile, “TAIF-NK” specializes in processing heavy sour crude oil and gas condensate, supplying a range of products from fuels to specialized materials for petrochemicals and military applications.
In addition to the refineries, the “Tolyattikauchuk” plant focuses on synthetic rubber production, which is crucial for manufacturing solid rocket propellants used in tactical and ballistic missiles, as well as high-octane gasoline additives.
Ukrainian forces also targeted command and observation posts of Russian troops in the Oboyan and Iskra regions of Kursk Oblast. This follows a previous strike on June 10, which affected the Kuybyshev Oil Refinery in Samara, where damage to primary oil processing units was confirmed, leading to a halt in operations.
On the morning of June 12, Russian authorities acknowledged drone attacks in Tatarstan and the Samara region. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems intercepted 231 Ukrainian drones during these incidents.
Ukrainian forces have launched strikes on critical oil and chemical facilities in Russia, causing significant damage and operational disruptions. The attacks underscore ongoing military tensions between the two nations, with both sides reporting drone activity in the region.
