Ukrainian Crew Members on MV Hondius Confirmed Amid Hantavirus Cases

The operator of the MV Hondius, Oceanwide Expeditions, has confirmed that five Ukrainian nationals are among the crew members on board the vessel, where cases of hantavirus have been reported.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which cited information from the Ukrainian embassy in the Netherlands, there are currently no indications of serious health issues among the crew members.

Official statements from Oceanwide Expeditions indicate that the ship is located off the coast of Cape Verde. The company has implemented stringent preventive measures, including isolation protocols, hygiene practices, and medical monitoring. The vessel is carrying 149 individuals from 23 different countries.

Oceanwide Expeditions is in close collaboration with local and international authorities, including the World Health Organization and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to address the situation.

The MV Hondius was en route from Argentina to Cape Verde when three individuals on board reportedly died.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans from rodents through inhalation of airborne particles generated from dried animal excretions, such as feces, saliva, or urine. In rare instances, transmission can occur through bites or scratches from infected rodents.

The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, is currently addressing hantavirus cases among its crew, including five Ukrainians. Health authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with no serious health concerns reported at this time.
