Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Returns Honorary Award Amid Tensions

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, has announced his decision to return the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. This follows similar statements from Polish officials, including Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Budanov.

In a post on Facebook, Bodnar expressed that Ukrainians view Poland primarily as a friend, ally, and partner. He emphasized the gratitude of the Ukrainian people for Polish support during challenging times, stating that this assistance would always be remembered.

Bodnar highlighted his ongoing efforts to foster positive relations between the two nations, aiming to advance joint projects and address complex historical issues. He noted that productive dialogue over the past year and a half has led to significant achievements.

However, he also remarked on the “historically unjust” decision to strip the Ukrainian president of the highest Polish honor, which he felt compelled to respond to. He stated, “In the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, under missile and drone attacks, this decision is perceived particularly painfully and emotionally as a gesture towards the entire Ukrainian people. Under these circumstances, I am forced to return the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.”

Bodnar warned that disputes between Ukraine and Poland only benefit Russia. He urged for a focus on dialogue, stating, “Despite the current situation, I am convinced that wisdom will prevail over emotions, and mutual respect will overcome political circumstances. We may have different views and disagreements, but we must not lose the ability to listen to each other and seek solutions through dialogue. Let us remember that our quarrels always benefit the enemy—Moscow. Once again, I call for an open conversation. I am confident that with goodwill, we will find reasonable solutions.”

Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar has decided to return a prestigious Polish honor in response to perceived injustices amid ongoing tensions. He emphasizes the importance of dialogue and mutual respect between Ukraine and Poland.
