Ukraine’s Zelensky Discusses Use of Abramovich’s Chelsea Sale Proceeds for Air Defense

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the potential allocation of £2.4 billion from the sale of Chelsea Football Club by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich to bolster Ukraine’s air defense systems.

In an interview with The Guardian, Zelensky emphasized that these funds could significantly aid in financing air defense systems designed to intercept Russian missiles, which frequently target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“The Prime Minister told me he is making every effort, and our diplomatic teams are discussing this. Of course, this is a challenging moment. We need greater security, and we are trying to purchase missile defense systems from the U.S. through the Purl program. They are very expensive, and this money could help. Frankly, it is fair. Russia started this war. Why not use Russian money?” Zelensky stated.

The President further stressed the necessity for continued investment from allies in Ukraine’s defense capabilities, expressing readiness to share the technological and military expertise gained during the conflict.

British officials are preparing for a possible legal challenge against Abramovich after he missed a deadline for the £2.4 billion payment from the Chelsea sale. The government aims to utilize these funds for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

Abramovich sold Chelsea in 2022 under pressure from the UK government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At that time, he was under sanctions, and the government granted him a license to sell the club with the stipulation that the proceeds would support war victims in Ukraine.

Since then, there has been disagreement over whether the funds should be exclusively spent in Ukraine or if they could be used elsewhere. The money is currently held in a UK bank account controlled by Abramovich’s company, Fordstam.

Earlier reports from the Financial Times indicated that Abramovich visited Kyiv in May at Zelensky’s invitation, aiming to persuade Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin of the necessity for their bilateral meeting.

A government source also confirmed the meeting between Zelensky and Abramovich in Kyiv, with Zelensky noting that Abramovich came to deliver a “personal message for me and wanted to receive a message from me to pass on to Putin.”

Ukrainian President Zelensky has proposed using £2.4 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC to enhance Ukraine's air defense systems. The funds, originally intended for humanitarian efforts, have sparked discussions about their appropriate use amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
